Fine for motor vehicle offences doubled

Coimbatore: In a determined effort to highlight the seriousness of violating traffic rules, fines on motorists who disobey traffic rules have been revised. Existing fine amounts have been doubled.

Coimbatore: In a determined effort to highlight the seriousness of violating traffic rules, fines on motorists who disobey traffic rules have been revised. Existing fine amounts have been doubled. 

The revision of the Motor Vehicle Bill was passed in the Assembly, yesterday. The revised fines have been decided upon to create awareness on the seriousness of having to obey traffic rules and to let people know that the traffic police use latest technology to spot offenders. 

Earlier, the fine for not having a licence was Rs. 500 but has now been hiked to Rs.1000. The fine for riding vehicles without being of the eligibility age has been hiked to Rs.10,000 from Rs. 500. The fine for over speeding for LMW vehicles is Rs.1000 and MMW vehicles is Rs. 2000 from Rs. 400 which was collected previously. 

Fine for endangering lives has been increased from Rs. 1000 to Rs. 5000. Fine on drunk driving has been increased from Rs.2000 to Rs. 10,000. Fine for racing on roads has increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5000. Fine for overloading the vehicle has been increased to Rs. 1000 per person. Fine for not wearing a seat belt has been increased from Rs. 100 to Rs.1000. Fine for more than two riders on a two-wheeler has been increased from Rs. 100 to Rs. 1000. 

Fine for not allowing an ambulance to pass is Rs.10,000, while fine for riding without insurance has been increased from Rs.1000 to Rs. 2000. In the case of minors riding the vehicle, the owner of the vehicle will be fined Rs. 25,000 and jailed for three years with appropriate action on the minor as well.
