A couple attempted to immolate themselves at the weekly grievances redressal day meeting in the collectorate here on Monday alleging that their patta land was encroached by a neighbour.
The couple identified as C Arumugam, 55, and A Ammasai, 50, from Molappalayam near Annur on the outskirts of the city, doused themselves with kerosene on the collectorate campus. Police stopped them and took them to Race Course police station.
The couple, both farm workers, said that the state government had issued patta for 4.5 cents of their land at Molappalayam in 1986. They constructed a house and had been living on the land since then. However, a neighbour demolished a makeshift shed, constructed by the couple and encroached that portion of land. He claimed that a panchayat road was being proposed through the lan Ammasai said she lodged a petition to the district collector on June 1, 2015 requesting to intervene.
Government surveyors measured the land on December 12, 2015 and declared that it belonged to the couple. But the neighbour refused to part with the land. The district administration has ordered officials to take appropriate action.
