Noyyalai Nokki, a people’s initiative to restore river Noyyal for 160 km along with its streams, anaicuts and tanks, was launched.
Change in the course of the river, shrinking of the width of the water body, sewage mix, just the dry river bed in some places, flash floods and soil eroded bunds is what Noyyal is now.
If all goes as proposed, this would change and it will be a river with perennial flow of clean water. The initiative is under the banner Noyyal River Restoration Federation (NRRF).
Noyyalai Nokki, a people’s initiative to restore river Noyyal for 160 km along with its streams, anaicuts and tanks, was launched here on Saturday. It runs through and benefits four districts in the Western Tamil Nadu. According to Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, the objective of the project is to restore the entire river system, though it might take time.
Noyyalai Nokki will be implemented by NRRF, which includes Siruthuli (Coimbatore), Jeeva Nadhi Noyyal (Tirupur), Olirum Erodu (Erode) and Noyyal Kappom (Karur).
Ahill S. Rathinasamy of Jeeva Nadhi Noyyal said at the launch of the project here on Saturday that the river runs for 60 km in Coimbatore district and about 40 km in Tirupur district. Efforts will be taken to complete the restoration work in Tirupur district even before it is completed in Coimbatore.
According to Chinnaswamy of Olirum Erodu efforts have been taken in Erode district since last June to restore water bodies.
Sudhakar of Noyyal Kappom said, “The presence of a large number of youth here gives hope. I give an assurance that we will complete the project by taking the river to the Cauvery through the restoration works in Karur district.”
