Woman, lover held on charges of robbery

A 22-year-old woman and her boyfriend were arrested on Saturday for stealing 36 sovereigns of gold from a house in Jothi Nagar in Podanur on March 17. Police said the woman had hatched a plan with her lover and entered the house belonging to an elderly woman and took away gold ornaments and 12,000 in cash. Her lover gagged the elderly woman to stop her from raising an alarm.

The arrested were identified as V Devika, 22, of Podanur and I Samayathulla Javed, 22, from Jothi Nagar in Podanur.

Police said Gowri, 60, wife of Natarajan, 68, stayed in Jothi Nagar in Podanur. Her husband had gone to his hometown and she was living alone for a week. On March 17, around 2am, the Devbika and Javed entered the house when Gowri had opened the back door to go to the toilet. They gagged her and decamped with the valuables.

Police said Devika stayed in a rented house located next to Gowri's house. Devika had an eye for Gowri's jewelleries and had kept a close watch on her movement. The due entered the house and stolen 36 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 12,000 in cash from the house. JJaved had pledged a few sovereigns of gold ornaments and bought a new mobile phone. "They wanted to lead a lavish life and so took to burglary. We have recovered 36 sovereigns of gold from the duo," said police. He added that her family members were not aware that Devika was involved in two burglary cases.
