Two workers dead, one hurt as crane crashes and falls on them

Two people died of grievous head injuries on the spot and another person sustained injuries after a crane fell on them near Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district late on Friday night.

   

The deceased have been identified as P Sakthivel, 45, and K Murugesan, 55, of Navanampatty in Pennagaram taluk.

   

The villagers of Navanampatty decided to deepen and desilt a common well in the village. They approached Sakthivel and his friends who usually perform such tasks in the village.

On the request of the villagers, Sakthivel and his team came to the well two days ago and started the well deepening and desilting work. "Eight people were engaged in the work. Sakthivel, Murugesan and P Edumban, 45, all from the same locality, were at the bottom of the well while the rest were standing outside," the Pennagaram police said.

   

According to police, the workers were using a crane to carry the debris up. Around 9 pm, the crane suddenly fell on the three people while they were working. Eyewitnesses immediately informed the police who in turn alerted fire and rescue services personnel from Pennagaram.

   

The fire fighters rushed to the spot and lifted all the three victims using thick ropes. Sakthivel and Murugesan who received severe head injuries died while Edumban was battling for his life. He was rushed to the Dharmapuri government medical college hospital for treatment. Doctors who examined him said his condition was stable.

   

A case was registered and further investigations are underway.
