K. Ravichandran (52), a Sub-Inspector (SI) attached to the Mahalingapuram Police Station in Pollachi Sub-Division, Coimbatore district, was killed in an accident during a vehicle check at T.Kotampatti check-post on Pollachi to Palladam Road on Saturday.
Goods Carrier
The incident took place around 12. 10 a.m. on Saturday when a goods carrier tried to overtake a lorry which was parked near a barricade at the check post.
The barricade hit Ravichandran who fell down and sustained a head injury. He was rushed to a private hospital where he died around 12.50 a.m.
His body was taken to the Pollachi Government Hospital, where public thronged in large numbers along with department personnel to pay respect to the SI who was popular among the local people because of his integrity and friendly approach.
Expert
Superintendent of Police of the Coimbatore District unit R.V. Ramya Bharathi said that the SI proved his leadership qualities in specific tasks and was an expert in night patrol.
Hailing from Urulikal estate in Valparai, Ravichandran joined the department as a Grade II police constable in 1984.
He is survived by his wife and two sons.
Seized
The driver of the goods carrier S. Kartikeyan (29) of Kanjampatty near Pollachi was booked under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, arrested and remanded. The vehicle involved in the incident was also seized.
