Corporation gets government nod, to sign twinning MoU after TN poll

The city corporation gets its nod from the state and central and will sign a MoU with the city of Stadt Esslingen Am Neckar in Germany after the elections. "As the model code of conduct is in force, the mayor cannot sign the MoU. Once the elections are over, we will sign the documents and take the process further," said officials at the secretariat. After the MoU is signed, the city will become Coimbatore's sister city.

As per the order dated February 29, the agreement would be for a three-year period. During this time, both the cities would develop a joint action plan and project proposals and inform their respective national governments periodically about the activities being undertaken. under thge agreement. The cities will set up a twinning cell and form a committee for technical advice. Regular meetings will be conducted to communicate on programmes, projects and activities that are to be undertaken.

Officials said that the twinning will aim at sharing information, experiences and knowledge through training programmes, seminars and visits. Projects to improve the current infrastructure and facilities of Coimbatore city by getting know-how expertise, consultancy and equipment will be undertaken.

Major area of cooperation will be sharing of expertise and cooperation in the fields of service delivery, civic administration, land use planning and management, transport, education, culture, sports, waste water and soIid waste management, infrastructure, environment, public health, science and technology, tourism, heritage management and planning related matters. They will also undertake exchanges involving delegations, interaction between institutions and sharing of experiences in the areas of mutual interest.

The ministry of external affairs, Government of India, has made certain changes in the agreement as per legal requirement. The has accepted the changes and have sanctioned the projects.

"This was initiated so that business and technological exchanges could be made easier between the two cities. Technological help for two serious problems that the city faces, solid waste management and maintenance of water bodies will be sought from the German city," said an official.

Esslingen Coimbatore Assocation (Esscom) was formed in the city to strengthen ties with the German city in 2009. The idea of twinning was initiated by the association and civic body officials visited the German city in September 2010. A delegation from the German city visited Coimbatore in February, last year and this process picked pace after that.
