Hats, and sunglasses were distributed to traffic police personnel at Thernilai Thidal on Thursday.
Deputy Commissioner for Traffic R. Sivakumar distributed hats to 40 police personnel, and coolers to 60 who joined the force a month ago.
This is in addition to lime juice or buttermilk being given to them twice a day to beat the heat while on duty.
Traffic policemen said that they experienced a burning sensation in the eyes, stomach pain, and fatigue when the mercury level went up. While the usual duty time for those on traffic duty was eight hours a day with a break for four hours, they had to extend their shifts during elections.
The police also distributed buttermilk free of cost to around 2,000 people at K.G. Street.
