Reeling under debt, egg seller kills self, requests money lenders not to trouble his wife

A 55-year-old egg seller on Sunday committed suicide in his shop at Sundarapuram here after he found himself in neck-deep debt. In a suicide note he left behind, he requested money lenders not to trouble his wife for money, besides thanking them for lending him lakhs of rupees.

The deceased has been identified as S Sahayaraj, 56, of Sri Ram Nagar at Podanur. He owned the shop at Sundarapuram. According to police on the case, Sahayaraj borrowed lakh of rupees from a number of money lenders to run the business. But, he incurred huge losses and was not in a position to repay the loan amount.

Meanwhile, his wife Jacqueline Mary, 50, used to quarrel with her husband over borrowing huge sums from money lenders. Jacqueline had finally moved to her younger sister's house at Sundarapuram three days back. A frustrated Sahayaraj went to his shop on Sunday around 6am. When he didn't come out of the shop even after an hour, neighbours checked for him there and found him hanging from the shop.

They immediately alerted the Podanur police, who reached the spot and sent the body to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for post-mortem. Police have recovered a suicide note from the crime scene. In the suicide note, police said, Sahayaraj has thanked the money lenders for lending money to run his business and also requested them not to disturb his wife for money.

After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the relatives of the deceased. Podanur police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
