‘Prosecute officials to stop honour killings’

Former Madras High Court judge K. Chandru on Saturday said that honour killings such as murder of Shankar in Udumalpet Bus Stand could be stopped only if action was initiated against District Collectors and top police officers. He recalled Supreme Court judgments in this regard.

After attending a private function here on Saturday he told reporters that it was the duty of the judiciary to protect inter-caste couples from atrocities.

He said that such action could be initiated if anyone files a Public Interest Litigation before the High Court. He claimed that the Tamil Nadu Government was reluctant to frame laws to prevent such killings.

He stated that the police have all powers to take action against those making statements justifying such murders. The judge said that only if people voted for anti-communal parties such incidents could be prevented.

Justice Chandru said that corrupt judges had been in existence since the times of the British. He added that Madras High Court had taken against eight judges in about a year’s time.
