Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate the Rs.460 crore Ukkadam-Athupalam flyover in Coimbatore on August 9. The project aims to ease traffic congestion in the city's commercial hub.
Coimbatore: The industrial hub of Coimbatore is set to witness a significant infrastructural boost as Chief Minister M.K. Stalin prepares to inaugurate the much-awaited Ukkadam-Athupalam flyover on August 9. The flyover, constructed at a cost of Rs.460 crore, is expected to ease traffic congestion in one of the busiest commercial areas of Tamil Nadu's second-largest city.
The flyover project, which commenced in 2018, has been completed in two phases. While the main structure is ready, work on the approach roads to Sungam is in the final stages. This infrastructure development is part of a larger initiative to address the growing traffic challenges in Coimbatore, which has seen rapid expansion and population growth over the past two decades.
Coimbatore, often referred to as the Manchester of South India, is renowned for its small and medium-scale industries. The city has also become a preferred destination for large-scale industries, IT companies, and educational institutions. Its strategic location as a gateway to Kerala has further contributed to its economic significance and diverse population.
The Chief Minister's visit to Coimbatore is not limited to the flyover inauguration. Stalin will also launch the Tamil Puthalvan scheme and lay foundation stones for several other development projects. These include a new flyover at Laly Road junction leading to Vadavalli, the Kalaignar Library and Knowledge Centre at the Semmozhi Poonga complex, and new buildings at Bharathiar University.
Additionally, Stalin will inaugurate a food street near V.O.C. grounds constructed at a cost of Rs.1 crore, a shelter for the homeless in Kadalaikara Sandhu, and a new building at the Government Arts College in Puliyakulam. These initiatives are part of the government's efforts to enhance urban infrastructure and public amenities in Coimbatore.
The inauguration of the Ukkadam-Athupalam flyover is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in the city center. It is one of several flyover projects planned for Coimbatore, including those on Avinashi Road, Mettupalayam Road, and Trichy Road, aimed at comprehensively addressing the city's traffic challenges.
As Coimbatore continues to grow as a major industrial and educational center, attracting people from across Tamil Nadu and neighboring states, such infrastructure developments are crucial for maintaining the city's economic momentum and improving the quality of life for its residents. The state government's focus on Coimbatore's development reflects its importance in Tamil Nadu's economic landscape.
