Perur to Become a Town Panchayat Free of Open Waste Dumping, Says Coimbatore District Collector

Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati inaugurated the "Clean Perur" initiative, launching an Integrated Solid Waste Resources Recovery Park in Perur on August 27. The project aims to transform Perur into a town panchayat free of open waste dumping.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu government, in collaboration with Coimbatore RAAC (Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore), has established an Integrated Solid Waste Resources Recovery Park in Perur. The park, set up with CSR funding from MILACRON, was inaugurated on August 27 as part of the "Clean Perur" initiative.

Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati attended the event as the chief guest.

Additional District Collector (Development) Sweta Suman, Perur Town Panchayat President Annadurai, and officials from MILACRON were also present at the inauguration.

The park is equipped with electric waste collection vehicles, a plastic waste shredding machine, and machinery for processing food and plant waste.

The District Collector inspected the installed equipment and vehicles, while the park organizers briefed him about its operations.

As a special gesture, a miniature model of Coimbatore's iconic clock tower, weighing 250 grams and made from 21 types of recycled waste materials including refills, pen-pencil cardboard boxes, and CDs, was presented to the District Collector as a memento.

Addressing the gathering, District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati said, "The population in various town panchayats and village panchayats in Coimbatore district is continuously increasing. In this scenario, solid waste management has become a significant issue. We have conducted various consultative meetings and seminars to find solutions. The lack of adequate space for solid waste management is a major problem. In Perur Town Panchayat, only 97 cents of land is available for solid waste management, with more than half of it already filled with old garbage."

He continued, "In this situation, there were challenges in managing the incoming 2-3 tons of waste. Now, with this park, we will manage solid waste using technology and equipment manufactured in Coimbatore itself. For Perur Town Panchayat, the machines are set up to manage waste from temple events and marriage halls. We will now be able to address the issue of plastic waste that was previously difficult to dispose of, by pulverizing it and recycling it into construction materials. Three vehicles have been obtained from a private company for door-to-door waste collection."

The Collector added, "We plan to create awareness about waste management through college students. We hope that Perur will transform into a town panchayat where no waste is dumped in open spaces."
