Scientists Investigate Insect Infestation in Coconut Trees in Kaniyur and Mopperipalayam Villages

Scientists conducted a study on insect-affected coconut trees in Kaniyur and Mopperipalayam villages on September 17. The team investigated various pests and provided farmers with control measures.

Coimbatore: A team of scientists led by Arul Prakasam, an entomologist from Aliyar Nagar, conducted a study on insect-affected coconut trees in Kaniyur and Mopperipalayam villages on September 17. The investigation was prompted by reports of disease-stricken coconut trees in these areas.

The scientific team examined the trees to determine if they were affected by pests such as black-headed caterpillars, rhinoceros beetles, whiteflies, and red palm weevils. They provided farmers with information on pest control methods for these insects.

Officials explained to farmers that black-headed caterpillar infestations are more common during periods of high temperatures. These caterpillars feed on the chlorophyll in the leaves at the base of the tree, causing the leaves to appear scorched. After the larval stage, the caterpillars transform into mature butterflies and lay eggs again.

To control these pests, farmers were advised to release natural braconid parasitoids at a rate of 21 packets per acre. These parasitoids are available to farmers at the Aliyar Nagar Coconut Research Center. Additionally, light traps should be set up at night to attract adult butterflies.

The scientists emphasized that chemical pesticides should only be sprayed on the leaves if the infestation is severe. They also noted that during periods of high temperature, the risk of black-headed caterpillar infestation increases significantly.

This comprehensive study and the subsequent recommendations aim to help coconut farmers in Kaniyur and Mopperipalayam villages effectively manage pest infestations and protect their crops.
