Government Pays Tribute to Poet Udumalai Narayana Kavi on 125th Birth Anniversary

On the 125th birth anniversary of Udumalai Narayana Kavi, government officials and dignitaries paid homage to his statue in Udumalpet. The event highlighted the poet's contributions and raised demands for honoring his legacy.


Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu government commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of renowned poet Udumalai Narayana Kavi by paying tribute to his statue at the Mandapam in Udumalpet Kuttai Thidal. The event, held on Monday, saw participation from various officials and dignitaries.

Narayana Kavi, born on September 25, 1899, in Poolavadi village of Udumalpet taluk, Tiruppur district, was known for his progressive thoughts on communism, equality, women's liberation, and self-respect. During the independence struggle, he wrote and performed patriotic songs on various stages. His contributions were recognized with the Sahitya Ratna Award from the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1967, and the same year, he received the Kalaimamani Award from the Tamil Nadu government.



District Revenue Officer Karthikeyan and Pollachi MP K. Eswaran garlanded the statue and paid floral tributes. A. Kaleswaran, an art teacher from Karathozhuvu Government Higher Secondary School, presented a portrait of Narayana Kavi he had drawn.

The Udumalai Narayana Kavi Literary Forum presented several demands, including naming the newly constructed bus stand in Udumalpet after Narayana Kavi, increasing the number of books in the Mandapam, and inaugurating the newly built reading room in the complex.

The event was attended by former Madathukulam MLA Jayaramakrishnan, Udumalpet Municipal Chairman Matheen, Udumalpet Union Committee President Mahalakshmi Murugan, Udumalpet Revenue Divisional Officer Jaswant Kannan, Tahsildar Sundaram, and family members of Udumalai Narayana Kavi.

The Mandapam, where the tribute took place, was established in 2001 by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to honor the memory of Narayana Kavi. Since then, it has been maintained by the Department of Information and Public Relations, with annual birth anniversary celebrations being held.
