The Supreme Court questioned Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu's public statement about animal fat in Tirupati Laddu, stating there was no basis for such claims and emphasizing responsible communication from public officials.
The Supreme Court of India has strongly criticized Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for his public statements regarding the use of animal fat in Tirupati Laddu. The apex court questioned the basis of Naidu's claims and emphasized the need for responsible communication from individuals holding constitutional positions.
The court pointed out that there was no clear evidence to support Naidu's allegations. "On basis of what material did the CM come to a conclusion that animal fat was being used in the laddu? Lab reports are not at all clear," the Supreme Court stated. It further questioned the timing of Naidu's press statements, noting that an investigation had already been ordered when he received the report in July.
The Supreme Court expressed concern over the potential impact of such statements on religious sentiments. "Unless the govt was sure, why did the CM go to the public with these allegations? What was the purpose of the investigation in such a case?" the court asked. It emphasized that the religious sentiments of devotees need to be respected and that there was no need for the Chief Minister to go to the press with unverified information.
Addressing the specifics of the controversy, the court stated, "Reports prima facie indicate that the ghee which was not found in conformity was NOT used in the laddu." It further added, "Prima facie, there is no proof to say adulterated ghee was used in making the laddu."
The Supreme Court's remarks underscored the importance of responsible communication from public officials. "Persons in constitutional posts should make public statements with some responsibility," the court asserted. This statement serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of making unsubstantiated claims, especially when they involve sensitive religious matters.
The controversy surrounding the Tirupati laddu has drawn significant attention, given the importance of the Tirupati temple in Hindu tradition. The Supreme Court's intervention and strong statements highlight the need for thorough investigation and verification before making public statements that could affect religious sentiments and public trust.
