Government to Build Kalam Memorial In National Capital

Based on popular request to set up a Kalam memorial in the capital, through a Change.org petition, the Delhi government has approved erecting a memorial for the former president on July 27 at Dilli Haat INA.

To collect the belongings of the ‘People’s President’, Delhi Culture Minister Kapil Mishra will visit Kalam’s family on Wednesday.

Change.org had submitted a petition titled Don’t Insult Kalam for setting up a knowledge centre in memory of Kalam in New Delhi collecting 30,000 signatures.

Responding to the petition, the Delhi government has come forward to set up a memorial in the national capital. The former president’s belongings will be displayed in the memorial.

Speaking to Express, Kapil Mishra, said that the Central government had sent Kalam’s belongings to his family in Rameswaram. Based on popular request and discussions with the former president’s family, the Delhi government has decided to bring back some of his belongings to be displayed in his memorial at the national capital.

The former president’s pens, dresses, hand-written notes, utensils and other belongings would be taken to Delhi and prior to the memorial being opened, they will be displayed in the Delhi Assembly.    

Preethi Herman, country lead of Change.org, said that the Minister’s quick action on public request is an example of a responsive government.
