Training camp for police personnel concludes

The three-day defence training camp for police personnel on their preparedness in case of a Maoist attack that was conducted by the Special Task Force (STF) concluded with a drill in which cops tackled an unexpected Maoist intrusion into a police station at Pillur Dam, on Wednesday evening.

Two Maoists managed to cross the border and sneaked into the Pillur Dam police station during the late hours of Wednesday and started attacking the police personnel there. The panic button in the station was raised and a team of police from outside the station made the counter-attack.

Armed police personnel entered the station, nabbed the duo and seized their weapons. In the exercise that lasted less than 10 minutes, a policeman and a Maoist were injured and were given first aid. Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District, R.V. Ramya Bharathi and other officers witnessed the drill.

Police personnel from the Naxal Special Division, IV Battalion of Tamil Nadu Special Police and from the eight police stations in the district that border Kerala and a few forest personnel took part in the programme that started on Monday. Senior STF officers, including Superintendent of Police S.V. Karuppusamy, handled classes.

They were also trained in conducting combing operation in the forest, sensing attacks, counter-insurgency, ambush and weapon handling, and handling situations at night. A senior police officer said that the training was conducted to step up the preparedness of police to handle attacks by Maoists, like the ones they have been conducting across the border in Kerala.
