Shorter Hospital Stays, Faster Recovery: VG Hospital Unveils Advanced Robotic Surgery Platform

Marking a major leap in surgical innovation, V.G. Hospital in Coimbatore has introduced the TOUMAI MT-1000 robotic platform, enabling advanced minimally invasive procedures across multiple specialties. The system is expected to offer patients quicker recovery, shorter hospital stays and reduced postoperative discomfort.

Coimbatore, June 8: V.G. Hospital has inaugurated its Advanced Robotic Surgery Centre in Coimbatore, marking a significant advancement in the region’s healthcare landscape with the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery.

Established in 1955, V.G. Hospital has grown into a leading multi-speciality healthcare institution serving patients across western Tamil Nadu. Founded by the late Dr. N. Venugopalakrishnan, the hospital is currently led by renowned laparoscopic surgeon Dr. V. Venkatesh, along with Dr. Asha Venkatesh, Dr. V. Nandini and Dr. Ramya.

Through its Indian Institute of Laparoscopic Surgery (IILS), the hospital has trained more than 4,000 surgeons, gynaecologists and super-specialists from India and overseas since 1994.

TOUMAI MT-1000 MedBot Robotic Surgical System

Building on its long-standing expertise in minimally invasive surgery, the hospital has introduced the TOUMAI MT-1000 MedBot Robotic Surgical System, one of the first advanced robotic surgery platforms to be installed in the region.

According to Dr. V. Venkatesh, the robotic platform combines the benefits of minimally invasive surgery with enhanced precision and control, enabling surgeons to perform complex procedures with greater accuracy.

The system will be deployed across multiple specialties, including gastrointestinal and general surgery, colorectal surgery, surgical oncology, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, urology and gynaecology. It is particularly suited for procedures involving complex dissection, intricate suturing and operations in deep anatomical spaces.

The platform provides surgeons with a high-definition three-dimensional view of the surgical field, advanced wristed instruments with an enhanced range of motion, and tremor filtration technology that improves surgical precision.

Dr. Venkatesh said the technology can help patients benefit from smaller incisions, reduced postoperative pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays and an earlier return to normal activities.

Among its key innovations, the TOUMAI platform features advanced image enhancement technology, Indocyanine Green (ICG) fluorescence imaging for improved visualisation of anatomical structures, real-time surgical smoke filtration and sophisticated multi-quadrant surgical capabilities.

The robotic platform has also gained international recognition for its telesurgery capabilities, successfully demonstrating remote surgical procedures across vast distances through high-speed communication networks.

With the launch of the Advanced Robotic Surgery Centre, V.G. Hospital has expanded its portfolio of advanced surgical services, further strengthening Coimbatore’s position as a growing hub for specialised healthcare and medical innovation.
