The city police on Friday registered a case against an All India Anna Dravida Munetra Kazhagam functionary for alleged distribution of cash for votes.
Race Course inspector V. Selvaraj said that a case has been registered against S. Abbas (71), of Thirumarai Nagar in Podanur, for alleged distribution of cash to people near a hotel on the Government Arts College Road on Thursday.
He is the city joint secretary of the party’s minority wing.
Police sources said that a case was registered under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
It was registered on a complaint received by the police through the whatsapp number ‘81900 00100’. By the time the police reached the spot, the functionary reportedly managed to leave the place.
According to the police, Abbas and those who had received money from him (around Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 per head) claimed that it was not for votes, but gift for Tamil New Year. Police were following the transactions made by the functionary. They added that further inquiries were underway.
