Man hurt while escaping after thefts, succumbs at hospital

A 31-year-old man, who was badly injured while escaping on a bike after committing three thefts in the city in the wee hours of Tuesday succumbed to injuries on Friday. The man was identified as M. Shafia (31), from Perumal Kovil Street at Kottaimedu in the city.

The man, who stole a motorcycle and then snatched mobile phones from people was chased by those along the roadside.

Accident

While escaping, he met with an accident around 4.30 a.m. on Tuesday while fleeing from the persons chasing him. He rammed against an electric post near Royal Theatre on the Big Bazaar Road. Those who chased him, took pity on him and got him admitted him at CMC Hospital amid police protection.

Inquiries revealed that the injured stole the bike of A. Zaheer Hussain (31), a fish trader residing on the housing unit on the Vincent Road at Kottaimedu. Police said that Zaheer parked the bike on the road in front of his house. It was stolen around 3.30 a.m.

Shafia then rode the stolen bike to Lanka Corner and stole mobile phones of P. Maleswaran (24), of Kanniwadi in Dindigul district, and T. Gokulnath (23), of Selvi Nagar in Tiruvarur district, who were sleeping on the footpath.

Police said that only on Thursday they managed to identify the man, who was unconscious.

After his death, the case of rash and negligent driving against him was altered to 304(A) (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

The bike and mobiles he stole were recovered.
