Pattali Makkal Katchi’s youth wing president and chief ministerial candidate Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the State Government to pay compensation to the family of the 65-year-old farmer who died on Saturday by consuming poison.
Ramasamy, the farmer of Veppampudur near Karamadai in Coimbatore District, consumed poison as he was unable to repay the loans.
Dr. Anbumani urged the State Government to give Rs. 25 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased farmer. He also made an appeal to the Union Government and to the nationalised bank that lent money to the farmer to waive his loan and handover the land documents to the victim’s family.
According to the PMK leader, Ramasamy was the fourth farmer to commit suicide in the State in April. As many as 2,423 farmers in Tamil Nadu have taken the extreme step due to their inability to repay loans. This was due to inadequate irrigation facilities, inability to get the right price for farm produce, and natural calamities, he said.
Dr. Anbumani took the opportunity to highlight the party’s election manifesto to put an end to farmer suicides by waiving agricultural loan, introducing irrigation schemes, increasing procurement price of farm produce and providing farm inputs free of cost.
