Delay in completing road work irks residents

The delay is due to the drainage work and shortage of asphalt: Corporation

Blue metal has started coming off the road surface on Gandhipuram Fourth Street and its extension. On Gandhipuram Second and Third streets and on Raju Naidu Streets I and II too the road condition is no different.

The loose stones have made driving difficult, especially for two-wheeler riders who tend to lose balance. This has been the condition of the roads for the past three months or so, complains councillor A. Nandhakumar.

On Gandhipuram Second Street Extension, dust from the road is also a problem. Launderer K. Pandian says he has been finding it difficult to keep the clothes clean while pressing them because the dust that gets kicked up from passing vehicles settles on the clothes.

In the Gandhipuram Fourth Street Extension, increased traffic is adding to the problem, complains shopkeeper P. Rahman.

Mr. Nandhakumar says that he has been trying hard to have the works completed but has found little success. The Coimbatore Corporation Council approved of the proposal for the work in June 2015.

After delay, the work began in November-December last year and continues because in a few of the streets, the on-going storm water drain construction work is adding to the delay as the road work can be taken up only thereafter, he adds

Corporation sources say that the delay is due to the drainage work and also the shortage of asphalt. Two contractors have taken up the road construction work for around Rs. 40 lakh.

The contractors have promised to resume work in the next week and they will finish in the 15 days thereafter, the sources add.

Mr. Nandhakumar says that the officials must get the work completed because the volume of traffic has increased due to the ongoing flyover work at the GP Signal junction.
