Germany to support Coimbatore in treating water and the tanks’ upkeep

Germany can help the city in treating water and the tanks’ upkeep

Coimbatore Corporation plans to use Germany’s technical expertise in implementing the Smart Cities project.

According to officials here, the Ministry of Urban Development have stated that Germany will handhold Coimbatore and two other cities – Kochi and Bhubaneswar – in implementing the project.

The city is looking forward to the European country’s support on the environment front.

They say that German support for Coimbatore will come in handy.

For the area-based initiative, the Corporation had suggested cleaning and development of water bodies. Germany could help the city in treating water and suggesting ways for the tanks’ upkeep.

For the pan-city initiative too, German support will do wonders because the city has gone in for smart poles, which with cameras, Wi-Fi transmitters and other devices will improve city governance.

Civil society activists say that while German help was welcome, all depends on how much the Corporation wants to make use of the support.

There was no point in just taking technical advice; the Corporation should go in for a deeper handholding so that the project outcomes are achieved, says S. Baskar of IC Centre for Governance. This is important because in implementing the JNNURM projects, the Corporation hardly achieved the outcomes.

An urban designer says that the city’s twin-city understanding with the German city Esslingen will also come in handy.

Officials say the city was ready to work with German support but the Corporation will be able to take things forward only after the State Government and the Central Government approve the memorandum of association for the special purpose vehicle, which will implement the project.
