A couple committed suicide by consuming cow dung powder at Ganeshapuram near Periyanaickenpalayam early Sunday morning. According to police, they were in a financial crisis and thus took the extreme step.
The deceased were identified as F Albert, 36, a taxi driver and his wife A Victoria, 34, a tailor in a private firm. They have two sons, Saiju, 12, a Class VI student and two-year-old Laiju.
Police said that Albert was an alcoholic who could not hold a steady job. Thus, his wife took up a job as a tailor at a private unit at Samichettipalayam. She was the sole breadwinner of the family. However, it was difficult for the couple to survive on her income alone. They often fought over their financial problems.
On Saturday morning, Albert left his son's at his mother's house, 1km away from where they lived. He also asked him mother for Rs50,000 but he could not get any money from her.
At 7.30am on Sunday, F Alexander, 37, Albert's younger brother, went to meet him and found the front door of the house closed. He somehow managed to enter the house and found his brother and Victoria dead.
Periyanaickenpalayam police sub-inspector Venkatesan and his team rushed to the spot and sent the body to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital where a post mortem was carried out after which the bodies were handed over to the families on Sunday evening. The doctors from CMCH declared that the cause of the death was due to poisoning only. Periyanaickenpalayam police registered a case and further investigation is on.
