Two Get Life-Term For Murdering Their Co-Worker

Two construction workers were sentenced to life-imprisonment on Tuesday for murdering one of their co-worker at a construction site at Jeeva Street near Peelamedu on February 2013.

M Ramesh alias Ramesh Kumar, 21, and his friend N Kani alias Marikani, 21, both hailing from Aalampatti village in Virudhunagar district, were working at a construction site at Jeeva Nagar near Peelamedu in 2013.

They used to consume liquor every day after completing their work. The duo used to stay on the first floor of the building.

At 10.30pm on February 3, 2013, Ramesh and Kani consumed liquor at a Tasmac bar in Peelamedu and returned to the construction site. One of their co-workers, A Raja alias Yogaraja, 23, from Kambur village in Madurai district, asked them not to sleep at the construction site.

He was also drunk. G Jagadeesan, a building contractor from Tirupur, had fired Ramesh and Kani from the job after he received several complaints against them. Ramesh blamed Raja for the loss of his job. Thus, the duo decided to murder him.

Taking this opportunity, the duo assaulted Raja with an iron rod and a spade. Later, they concealed the body at the construction site and stole 1,000 and a mobile phone from the victim's pocket. Peelamedu police arrested the accused and remanded them to judicial custody. Later, the duo came out on bail and the case trial was held at the first additional district judge (IADJ) court.

On Tuesday, judge M Christopher delivered the verdict. He sentenced both Ramesh and Kani to life imprisonment and fined them each 1,000. Later, the accused were lodged at Coimbatore central prison.
