The Regional Passport Office here received a record 1,31,551 applications in 2015, and issued passports to 1,29,758 applicants.
The passport office has generated Rs. 20.41 crore as revenue in 2015.
Most number of passport applications were received from Coimbatore city (36,911), followed by Coimbatore rural (19,299), Erode (16,830), Namakkal (13,356), Salem city (11,509), Tirupur rural (10,566), Salem rural (10,349), The Nilgiris (7,833) and Tirupur city (5,764).
Speedy verification by the police played a key role in issuing more passports last year. Regional Passport Officer S. Sasikumar said 70 per cent passports were verified by the police within 21 days – the stipulated timeframe.
The fastest passport verification was done by the Namakkal police where the average time taken for verification was just 10 days.
It is followed by the Salem police that took an average of 11 days. Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Salem police completed passport verifications within 21 days. The Nilgiris police took 26 days, the Tirupur City Police and Coimbatore City Police took an average of respectively 32 days and 36 days for verification.
Mr. Sasikumar said that every week the passport office was updating the police on the number of applications processed and the backlog.
