TNAU sees sesame farm gate price at 50-52 per kg

The domestic and export market intelligence cell of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has estimated the farm gate price for sesame seeds anywhere at 50-52 per kg this season. The estimate was arrived at based on the analysis of prices of sesame seeds prevailed in Sivagiri market for the past 12 years.

However, Solvent Extractor's Association of India has estimated the current stock of sesame seeds at 3.14 lakh tonnes. "Prevailing prices of Indian sesame seeds is 30% less compared to last year, and according to traders, the price is expected to dip further. In this scenario, if the current stock is not sold out on the arrival of new produce, farmers are likely to feel the heat. However, they could reap profit, if they sell it in value-added forms like oil or cake," said a press release issued by the TNAU.

"And the results revealed that the farm gate price of good quality sesame would be around Rs50-52 per kg during the harvest period of March-April," said the TNAU release.

According to ministry of agriculture, sesame was cultivated in 0.53 lakh hectares of land, with an output of 0.23 lakh tonnes in Tamil Nadu in 2014-15. Districts that cultivate sesame in TN are Erode, Karur, Thanjavur, Cuddalore, Salem, Villupuram, Tiruppur and Thiruvannamalai.
