Members of the Farmers Safety Association have sought the intervention of the District Administration in setting up of electric towers in farmlands at Pellaepalayam village in Karamadai.
Petitioning the District Collector Archana Patnaik to find a solution to the issue, the members also alleged that the constructions are being done without informing the farmers.
“The towers are being erected to transport 400KV electricity from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) station in Pellaepalayam Village to Chennampalayam. In the process more than 90 high voltage electricity towers are being erected in farmlands,” one of the farmers alleged.
Claiming that there was no prior intimation to the farmers before occupying the lands, they also claimed that TANGEDCO officials are threatening their family members for raising the issue.
“They have come to our houses and have threatened that we would all be arrested for agitating,” claimed a member.
The members also stated that they would stage a hunger strike regarding the issue if the district administration continues to turn a blind eye.
“It is unjust on the part of the TANGEDCO officials to erect towers in their lands without getting their permission and our business will be lost if they continue in this manner,” they alleged.
