A home away from home for abandoned children and grown-ups

It is a home away from home for several children who have been abandoned by their biological parents. Universal Peace Foundation is a shelter home that is located in Karumathampatty, Coimbatore, and it continues to take care of the uncared for, and the abandoned children of the society. Till date, the home has rescued hundreds of children and it shelters them too.

The foundation has inmates of all age groups. Its team of volunteers and staff rescues the aged who have been left on the streets, most often by their own children. Currently, there are about 26 full time employees. They stay at the foundation and help with its administrative activities.

Meena, who works at the Universal Peace Foundation, tells us that there are currently 137 student inmates and 52 aged persons. “All the children are enrolled in various Government schools in this area. Five of our inmates are in college. One of them, who is currently studying nursing, has expressed her desire to become volunteer here, where she grew up, after she completes her studies.” Meena says.

Universal Peace Foundation is the brainchild of spiritual leader Guruji Shivathma and his wife Chitra Shivathma, established with the motto ‘hope in one’s self.' Its founders are believers of the principles of Lord Buddha. This foundation also works towards promoting peace and harmony through prayer and meditation. Currently, Siva Subramaniam serves as Managing Trustee of the Universal Peace Foundation.

One of the missions of this foundation is to provide free food, shelter, medicine, and other help and assistance to the poor, deserving and needy children. This NGO also works towards promoting Indian science of yoga meditation, and pranayama among children. In order to promote unity, peace and harmony among children so that they grow up with these values and become responsible citizens of our country, Universal Peace Foundation organizes periodic workshops on spiritual, ethical, philosophical, and moral education for a peaceful living.

As part of their future plans, the Universal Peace Foundation has plans of constructing a training centre for the differently-abled and they also have plans of creating sports facilities at their premises.

Universal Peace Foundation is a registered charitable trust (Reg. No. 246/2003) and therefore donations are entitled to tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act 1961, and Foreign Currency Regulation Act, 1976. The foundation can be reached at 99655-20785.
