Over 1,000 jewellers observed fast here on Monday, demanding withdrawal of the one per cent excise duty proposed on jewellery in the Union Budget.
B. Sabarinath, secretary of Coimbatore Jewellers’ Association, said the jewellers observed fast from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Similar protests were on across the country. In Tamil Nadu, hunger strike was organised by the jewellers in two or three locations.
In Coimbatore, retailers, manufacturers, workers, employees and goldsmiths participated in the protest.
There were representatives from nearby towns such as Annur, Pollachi, Vellakoil and Palani. The jewellers claimed that about 3,500 people took part in the hunger strike here.
