As many as 44,518 students took the Standard X examination in the district on Tuesday.
A release from the district administration here said that 22,066 boys and 22,452 girls from 516 schools wrote the examination at 140 centres.
Besides, 1,893 private candidates too took the examination. To ensure the smooth conduct of exam, 144 chief supervisors, 140 School Education Department officials, 13 security officers, 28 transit officials, 310 flying squad personnel, and 2,275 supervisors have been deputed.
The Department had made all arrangements for the students comfort.
The District Revenue Officer, T. Christuraj, inspected a few examination centres, the release added. In the Coimbatore and Salem Central Prisons, 68 inmates wrote the SSLC examination at the special examination centres.
Superintendent of the Coimbatore Prison D. Pazhani said that 67 of them were convicts, and one was detained under the Goondas Act. Among the 68, 59 of them were from Coimbatore, and nine from Salem.
As many as 14 inmates of the prison had gone to the Puzhal Prison complex in Chennai for writing the Plus-Two examination.

The SSLC examination commenced in the district at 81 centres on Tuesday.
An official release here said that 30,740 students had registered for the examinations this year in the district.
Of them, 29,664 students represent 325 schools and the rest were private students.
