A day after his party referred to the killing of a dalit man in Udumalpet as a "law and order" problem, DMK chief M Karunanidhi said the state government must strive for amity among all castes and religions.
On Sunday, Shankar, a dalit engineering student, was brutally murdered by a gang, while his non-dalit wife Kowsalya escaped with head injuries.
On Tuesday, Stalin in a Facebook statement preferred to describe the Udumalpet killing as a law and order situation. On Wednesday, Karunanidhi, reacting to critical statements in the media on the lack of a strong condemnation against the killing, a result of a caste fallout, said, "We have fought against discrimination on the basis of caste, religion but still such atrocities continue to happen in the state." The NHRC has suo motu filed a case on the Udumalpet killing.
The DMK chief also referred to the Dharmapuri incident involving a dalit youth, whose body was found on the railway track in 2012.
