Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has stepped up efforts to improve rainwater harvesting and strengthen stormwater management across the city, seeking the support of voluntary organisations as the northeast monsoon continues.
A meeting with representatives of voluntary organisations was held on October 23 under the chairmanship of Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, to discuss rainwater harvesting initiatives and coordinated monsoon preparedness.
During the meeting, the Commissioner emphasised the need to inspect and maintain existing rainwater harvesting structures, establish new facilities wherever necessary and encourage public participation in water conservation in accordance with government guidelines.
The Corporation plans to hold monthly meetings with voluntary organisations to coordinate these efforts. Representatives will be encouraged to submit action plans and suggestions for improving rainwater harvesting, clearing drainage channels and addressing locations prone to waterlogging.
Participants suggested establishing rainwater harvesting facilities in Corporation-owned parks and other suitable locations, including areas where rainwater accumulates.
The Commissioner said Corporation officials had been instructed to assess rainwater harvesting infrastructure in their respective areas and take steps to repair and improve existing systems. Field inspections have been conducted to assess rainwater harvesting facilities at more than one lakh houses across the city.
Inspections are also being carried out at commercial establishments, industrial areas and other locations to assess rainwater harvesting arrangements.
Corporation Chief Engineer P. Jayalakshmi, zonal assistant commissioners, officials and representatives of several voluntary organisations participated in the meeting.
