Delay in payment of salaries to teachers: MP PR Natarajan writes letter to provide adequate grant to Avinashilingam University
Coimbatore: Regarding the delay in payment of salaries to teachers, MP PR Natarajan writes letter to provide adequate grant to Avinashilingam University. MP PR Natarajan wrote a letter to the Union Minister of Human Resource Development asking him to provide adequate subsidy to Avinashilingam University due to delay in payment of salaries to teachers.
Avinashilingam University has been facing delays in the payment of salaries to teachers and staff due to non-payment of required grants. If the grant is barred, the university runs the risk of becoming a self-funded institution. Thus, thousands of girls are at risk of losing their higher education opportunities. Regarding this Coimbatore MP PR Natarajan has written to Central Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal asking him to immediately allocate the required grant to Avinashilingam University.
In his letter he said, "I am writing this letter to bring to your attention an important issue facing Avinashilingam Direct University, which is operating in my constituency. Avinashilingam College was started in 1957 for women. Originally a government-funded college, it was upgraded to a non-governmental university in 1988 and is fully funded by the Central Government. The suspension of the grant in 2015 caused delays in the payment of salaries to teachers and staff. Subsequently a new Principal was appointed to the University and the issue was resolved. But the problem has arisen in granting the subsidy again in 2020. Salaries and pensions were paid in half in July. Only 75 per cent were delivered in October and November. There is a risk that the university will become a self-funded institution if it continues to be barred from providing grants."
He added that if such a situation arises, the higher education opportunity of thousands of girls from humble background will be lost and urged to immediately intervene and take action to continue the grant to Avinashilingam University. he also added that the university will continue to receive grants only if it comes under the direct control of the Central Government.
