Coimbatore : "In bid to minimise losses due to natural calamities, all farmers from the district have to enrol themselves in the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance scheme. The crop insurance is mandatory for farmers who have borrowed loan from nationalised banks and co-operative banks. It is optional for the other farmers whether to take up the crop insurance scheme by the government", said District Collector, K. Rajamani in a release.

The crop insurance is mandatory for farmers who have borrowed loan from nationalised banks and co-operative banks. It is optional for the other farmers whether to take up the crop insurance scheme by the government", said District Collector, K. Rajamani in a release.
"Crops like wheat, maize, groundnut, moong dal, urad, toor, horse gram are also eligible for crop insurance. The farmers need to pay only 2-5% of the premium and the rest will be borne by the government. For cotton crops, 5% and other variety crops 2% premium needs to be paid", the Collector noted.
The release also apprised that the PM insurance will cover loss due to insufficient water for farming, natural calamities and damage to the harvest within two weeks, due to storms. The insurance companies will redeem loss by calculating the loss in cases of crops like maize, horse gram and sesame and for other varieties, the damage will be assessed according to the damage in the village, as listed.
The Collector in the release detailed on the insurance premiums for various crops (in one hectare) -- wheat Rs. 644, Maize Rs. 207, Corn Rs.534, other grains Rs. 315, Groundnut Rs. 559 and for cotton Rs. 1290.
He also said that Oriental Insurance has been chosen of the district and farmers who wishes to take the crop insurance can contact the assigned officer for their area for easier processing.
Collector, K. Rajamani further added that to aid farmers in the process, the department of agriculture will hold awareness and contact programs. Additionally, help centres will be set up, he said.
For further details, the farmers can contact the respective Village officers with their Chitta and Aadhar and apply for the insurance by paying the premium. TheCollector has requested the farmers to make use of the scheme and secure their livelihood.
