Coimbatore: Central Railway administration has announced Mettupalayam-Ooty mountain train will resume normal fares from Thursdayonwards and tickets can be reserved online. Mountain Railway has been operating from Mettupalayam in Coimbatore to Ooty in the Nilgiris since 1989 during the British rule. Starting from Mettupalayam Railway Station, Ooty is 46 km away and the train passes through Kallar, Adarli, Rannimedu, Coonoor, Wellington, Aruvankadu, Kethi and Lovedale. The 19.50 km long railway between the mountain railway crosses 209 curves, 16 railway caves and 250 bridges.

While on the journey one can enjoy watching wildlife, including wild gaur, bears, leopards, spotted deer, moose, dragonflies and a variety of birds, as well as waterfalls. This train attracts a large number of tourists not only from the locals but also from abroad. Thus the mountain train was recognized by UNESCO as one of the oldest cultural sites in the world. The mountain train service has been suspended since March 25 due to the complete lockdown due to the coronavirus.

Central railways has announced that mountain trains will again be operated from Mettupalayam railway station to Ooty via Coonoor at the usual fare from Thursdayafter 9 months as the impact of the coronavirus was gradually declining across the country. They said it will operate 4 compartments from Mettupalayam to Coonoor and 5 compartments from Coonoor to Ooty. While returning the train will leave Mettupalayam at 7.10 am and reach Ooty via Coonoor at 11.55 am. The train will leave Ooty at 3 pm and reach Mettupalayam via Coonoor at 6.30 pm. Tickets for the trip can be booked online. This has delighted the tourists.
