Places of worship at Ukkadam Majeed Colony demolished and cleared completely!

Corporation completes the demolishing works of temples and mosques built at the encroached lands of Majeed Colony in Ukkadam.


Coimbatore: Under the Smart City scheme, lakes in Coimbatore including Ukkadam Periyakulam, Valangulam Lake, Kurichi Lake, Selvasindhamani Lake and Muthannan Kulam are to be cleared of encroachments. To welcome tourist attractions in Coimbatore, the Corporation has decided to build walking tracks, playing zones for kids, snack shops and purification stations on the shores of the lakes.

For the completion of this project slums near the lakes which are built on encroached lands were cleared. According to the government report around 400 houses in Majeed Colony near Ukkadam lake were demolished after the people were ordered to relocate.



The corporation has also demolished 2 Amman temples, a Madurai Veeran temple, Vinayagar temple and mosques in the area. The demolition works which began on 30th December have been completed now.

A Corporation official commented on this rebuilding work said that "places of worship built on the encroached lands are now removed completely for the commencement of the Smart City project. Under the Smart City project a parking lot is all set to be built on the area next to the lake for visitors. The parking lot will have a capacity for 200 two wheelers."
