Drinking water supplied in city from Pillur and Siruvani; Corporation Commissioner requests thrift use of water

The restriction of the Kerala Irrigation Department in filling water at Siruvani to the brim, for protection reasons for the past three years and the Corporation Commissioner, Raja Gopal Sunkara has requested the public to make use of the water thriftily.

Coimbatore: The CCMC Commissioner has requested the public to use drinking water thriftily, as the everyday provision of water from Siruvani Dam has reduced to less than 60 million liters from 90.

For the last three years, the Kerala Irrigation Department has not allowed the Siruvani dam to reach its full capacity on the grounds of safety reasons. In January and February, it released excess water from the dam into the Siruvani river and reduced the water storage level of the dam considerably.

Chief Minister MK Stalin, also wrote on the issue to the Chief Minister of Kerala on 01.02.2022 in this regard. However, the water level in the dam is low, and the inflow of water from the Siruvani dam through the cave route has come down drastically. This has resulted in the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, which is implementing and maintaining the project, providing less than 60 million liters of water per day instead of 90 million liters.

As a result, the gap between the days of distribution of drinking water has increased in the Siruvani distribution areas.

This, additional water is drawn from the Pillur Water Project. Water from Pillur is shared with Siruvani distribution areas, and distributed at uniform intervals in both distribution areas.

The Corporation stated that all steps to reduce the distribution intervals for Pillur and Siruvani distribution areas till the next monsoon season are implemented. Corporation Commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara has urged the public to cooperate by using drinking water sparingly.
