Expediting the revival of the Sanganur stream: A mission to preserve nature’s beauty

In order to improve the traffic congestion in the metropolitan area of Coimbatore, the local government has decided to expedite Sanganur stream restoration work. With this the banks of the stream will be strengthened and roads will be constructed for vehicular purpose.

Coimbatore: The Sanganur stream rises in the Western Ghats in Coimbatore and flows near Thadagam, Kavundampalayam, Rathinapuri, Ganeshpuram, Puliyakulam, Singanallur Pond, and ultimately into the Noyyal River.

This creek once carried fresh water. However, the creek has become poisoned by drains and encroached upon, rendering it unusable. In this case, in order to alleviate traffic congestion in the metropolitan area, the corporation decided to restore this stream by strengthening its banks and constructing roads for vehicles to travel over.

In addition, Rs 49 crores have been set aside for the rehabilitation of the Sanganur stream. Construction of retaining walls on both sides of the creek, as well as road construction, began on Thursday with funds from this fund.

On Thursday, Coimbatore Commissioner Prathap personally reviewed the construction activity. He also directed the concerned officials to complete the task as soon as possible. Vimala, Assistant Town Planning Officer, and other Corporation officials were present during the inspection.
