History of train services Coimbatore has lost so far - Dr Ramakrishnan

Coimbatore railway station ranks 3rd in terms of highest revenue earners in Southern Railway. However, coimbatore railway station has lost many trains that were already running.

Coimbatore: Those trains starting from a city’s railway station will get a large number of seats and bed facilities than when a train departs from another place and passes through a particular railway station, the passengers will get only a limited number of seats and bed facilities.

As long as Coimbatore (Podanur) was the headquarters of the Southern Railway, a lot of trains were operated from here. Hence, coimbatore railway station was a good revenue generating railway station.

The 150-year-old Coimbatore Junction, though not today the regional or divisional headquarters, It was recently selected by the Indian Railways to launch the 13th Vande Bharat Express, the country's fastest train service. The service has been well received by the people in the area.

Coimbatore continues to be the third highest-earning railway station on the Southern Railway covering all the railway stations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. There is still a lot of scope for new trains to arrive from Coimbatore. This will not only give a lot of revenue to the railways but will also provide good connectivity mainly to the public. In the last 60 years, Coimbatore has lost many trains that were operated to Kerala.

Similarly, Coimbatore does not receive many train services from other neighbouring states. In this regard, Dr. Ramakrishnan, Director, Kongu Railway Development Council has released the list of trains lost in Coimbatore.

Here’s a list of trains lost historically;

1) The 1864 CE Bangalore-Coimbatore Mail train was converted into the Island Express after 1956. It was first extended up to Kochi Island (port terminal), then up to Thiruvananthapuram, followed by Kanyakumari.

2) The Coimbatore-Trichy passenger train was extended upto Palakkad town.

3) The Tea Garden Express, which operated from Ooty/Mettupalayam to Cochin (Port Terminal) in 1940 CE, has now been shifted from Ernakulam to Karaikal. The train leaves Coimbatore only at midnight. It arrives only at midnight. Due to this, the people of Coimbatore are left with no other option and are urging the railway authorities to run new trains.

4) Mangala, Netravati and Rajdhani Express trains, which were running through Coimbatore, were diverted via the Konkan route.

5) The Navayuk Express train running from Coimbatore to Katra in Jammu connecting Mata Vaishno Devi Temple has been cancelled.

6) Intercity Express train between Coimbatore and Bengaluru was extended upto Ernakulam. However, as promised, the Amrita Express train was refused to be extended up to Coimbatore and it was unjustly extended to Madurai on a different route.

7) Though Coimbatore/Mettupalayam was the regular route, the Tiruchendur-Pollachi Express train was forcibly extended up to Palakkad.

8) The historic train service between Coimbatore and Rameswaram, which was operated overnight, has been stopped and should be restored.

9) The high-speed passenger train service between Coimbatore and Thoothukudi was stopped in 2009 during the railway line change. The service has not yet been restored.

10) If the Coimbatore-Madurai Superfast Intercity Express and the high-speed passenger train service between Coimbatore-Dindigul are resumed, they will provide good connectivity to the southern districts.

He also urged the authorities to respect the sentiments of the people of Coimbatore and take steps to restore the lost train services. "We must continue to raise our demands on various platforms in a democratic and legal manner to ensure the restoration of lost train services," he said.
