Fabric of change – SIMA hails Tamil Nadu textile policy note 2023-2024

On 11.04.2023, R,Gandhi, the minister of Handlooms and Textiles presented the Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi policy note in the house, announcing various initiatives to further support this growing industry.

The Tamilnadu textiles and clothing industry, which accounts for one-third of the country's textile business, is one of the largest textile manufacturing hubs on the global map and is constantly encouraged by the Tamilnadu government to fuel its growth by focusing on value addition, exports, and job creation not only for the benefit of Tamilnadu residents but also for several lakhs of people from other states.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has recently announced the Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Policy Note for the year 2023-24, much to the relief and appreciation of the SIMA (Southern India Mills Association). The state’s textiles and clothing industry accounts for a third of the country’s textile business and is a major global hub for manufacturing.

The policy note recognizes the need to focus on value addition, exports and job creation, as well as to benefit the people of Tamil Nadu and those from other states. The Minister of Handlooms and Textiles, R. Gandhi, presented the policy note in the House on 11th April 2023.

In a press release issued by SIMA Chairman, Ravi Sam, he thanked the Chief Minister and Minister for Handlooms and Textiles for their efforts in improving on strategic shifts within the Tamil Nadu textile sector. He further highlighted that 22 policy measures have been announced which will be beneficial to the handloom and textile sectors.

The announcement of creating a textile city closer to Chennai will help boost the Tamil Nadu brand. This will create an enormous market opportunity for strengthening domestic and international markets for the whole value chain in the state. Funds have also been allocated for convening an international technical textile conference, research and development facilities and workshops. These will provide support to technical textiles.

SIMA Chairman also welcomed policy initiatives specifically designed to benefit handlooms sector. These include young handloom entrepreneurs training, Dr.Kalaignar Karunanidhi Centenary Handloom Park at Arani, modernizing handlooms and encouraging them to switch over to package dyeing with zero liquid discharge facilities. He believes that all these measures will help strengthen the handloom sector and improve their market reach.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has taken a great step in recognizing the importance of the textiles industry in not only Tamil Nadu but also to India as a whole. With these measures, it is expected that not only will there be a boost in employment opportunities but also in economic growth. The benefits from this policy note are sure to be seen in the near future as more people come forward to invest in this sector.
