KCT to host Global scientific society ATBC's 59th Annual Meeting

Coimbatore: For the second time in India, the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) will host its latest annual meeting, and that too in Coimbatore.

A press conference was held today at Kumaraguru City Center and it was addressed by Dr.Ramesh Krishnamoorthy, Chair - ATBC 2023, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, Mr. Saravanan Chandrasekaran, Co - Chair - ATBC 2023 GM, Kumaraguru Institutions, Dr.Karunakaran, Scientist, Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Mr. Kalidass, Osai Environmental Organisation.

They stated that Kumaraguru College of Technology has been chosen to host the 59th ATBC meeting. It will be held between July 2nd and 6th, with over 400 members of the scientific community (200 from around the world) sharing vital ideas about global tropical biology conservation. Workshops, symposia, and presentations will be held.

It focus on,   Balancing Science, Conservation and Society is the theme of this year’s meeting, and the organizers are very much focused on taking the science they speak to the society at large.  

The speakers will deliver important addresses on 17 different topics related to Tropical Biology.

Most tropical countries South Africa, South America and South East Asian countries are known for their high biodiversity and human density. 

Exploitation of natural resources are seen more here. So the presentations by the speakers will also touch these areas.

This event will also concentrate on tropical biology and environmental issues on 3 different levels; Global, National and Local. 

On the other hand, the event will see two side events, that will concentrate on Corporates and Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

There are numerous business organisations that work on environmental projects today. They will discuss the areas where they can prioritise at this occasion.  

Concerning the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, it was stated that discussions concerning this biodiversity hotspot will be published in scientific journals and communicated to the public on how they can help conserve and safeguard this vital region for humans and wildlife.

There will be some declaration by the association at the end of this 4 day event, and there are plans to submit them to the government, as few high ranking government officials are also expected to attend this event.

The total carbon emitted during this 4 day event will be taken into account, including the footprint due to air travel, and that will be compensated by setting up an urban forest. Strenuous efforts will be taken to make the entire event as eco-friendly as possible.

ATBC is a 60+ year old international body to promote research, education, and communication of tropical biology and conservation. It has close to 1000 members from 70 countries. 

An edition of the annual meeting of this association was held for the first time in India in 2001 at Bengaluru. 

Now, after more than 20 years, India is again playing the host.
