Tamil Nadu Coconut Farmers' Association protest by breaking coconuts to press for their 12-point demand

Their demands include, “TN government should procure the peeled coconut at Rs 50 per kg and give rs 140 per kg of copra coconut. Steps should be taken to provide coconut oil at subsidised rates in ration shops across Tamil Nadu and to take immediate steps to control diseases in coconut.”


Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Coconut Growers' Association has been staging a coconut breaking protest at various places across Tamil Nadu to press for their 12-point charter of demands.

As part of this, the farmers belonging to the Coimbatore District Tamil Nadu Coconut Farmers' Association staged a protest by breaking coconuts near Canara Bank in Alandurai area of Coimbatore.



"The TN government should procure the peeled coconut at Rs 50 per kg and give rs 140 per kg of copra coconut. Steps should be taken to provide coconut oil at subsidised rates in ration shops across Tamil Nadu and to take immediate steps to control diseases in coconut. Action should be taken to provide coconut tree climbing equipments at subsidised rates, crop insurance for coconut farmers should be taken to insure all trees and all farmers. The 12-point charter of demands included a ban on import of oilseeds, adequate compensation for losses incurred by wildlife and accident insurance for coconut tree climbers.

More than 20 coconut farmers participated in the protest led by Coimbatore district deputy secretary Veerasamy and broke the coconuts on the road to press for their demands.
