The Nilgiris: S Jayachandran, 65, a noted conservationist and wildlife activist passed away at his residence in Ooty on Friday, following a cardiac arrest.

He worked to conserve the forests and wildlife of the Nilgiris and Sathyamangalam landscapes in Tamil Nadu for nearly 30 years. He founded the Tamil Nadu Green Movement (TNGM), a non-governmental organisation in 1990, to strengthen the battle against the influx of industries and the timber mafia in the Nilgiris.

He served as the honorary secretary of the Nilgiri wildlife and environment association, and was also a long-term partner of the wildlife conservation society’s India programme.
