Tirupur: The public has protested against the shifting of the post office in Udumalpet.

The post office, which was functioning for the past 42 years in VG Rao Nagar area of Eripalayam under Udumalpet municipality in Tiruppur district, has been shifted to Ayyalu Meenakshi Nagar, two kilometres away, without any prior notice.

Meanwhile, more than 100 people protested against the relocation of the post office and staged a protest at the Udumalpet head post office.

The residents of the area alleged that around 2,000 people had deposited permanent accounts at the V G Rao Nagar post office, more than 1,300 people had deposited their savings accounts and that more than Rs 1 crore per month had been transferred suddenly when the money was being traded.

They also said that since the post office has a large number of pensioners and elderly people, they have to travel two kilometres now, so steps should be taken to make the post office function in the same area again or else we will go on a strike to hand over ration cards and Aadhar cards.

The police then reached the spot and held talks with postal department officials. As they were informed that their demands would be forwarded to higher officials and an appropriate decision would be taken, the public temporarily gheraoed the protest and joined the protest. Tension prevailed in Udumalpet for more than an hour as people gheraoed the Head Post Office in Udumalpet and staged a protest.
