Power tariff hike: MSMEs decide to escalate their protests

Tamil Nadu Industrial Electricity Consumers Federation, representing more than 50 MSMEs, has decided to escalate its protest against the government's electricity tariff hikes and the need for the government to annul multi-year tariffs.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Industrial Electricity Consumers Federation, representing more than 50 MSMEs, has decided to escalate its protest against the government's electricity tariff hikes.

They announced that workers at micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will stage protests by wearing black badges and displaying black flags in their offices on October 9.

This action aims to draw the state government's attention to their unresolved demands concerning electricity charges. J James, the president of the Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Medium Enterprises (TACT) in Coimbatore, stated that they plan to submit a petition during grievance redressal meetings at all district collectorates on the same day.

Following the protest, they intend to conduct a statewide hunger strike, including in Chennai, to highlight their concerns to Chief Minister M K Stalin. Their demands include providing LT3A1 electricity connection as per Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) guidelines, abolishing peak hour charges for LT3B consumers, and reverting the standard rate for LT3B consumers in the 0-112 kilowatts category to the old rate of 35 per kilowatt.

Additionally, they urge the government to eliminate tariffs on solar rooftops and Grid Interactive PV Solar Energy Generating Systems (GISS). The TACT president emphasized the need for the government to annul multi-year tariffs and refrain from further electricity price hikes for two years, given the challenges faced by industries due to last year's tariff increase.
