Farmers Launch Hunger Strike Protesting Unpaid Compensation for Nallathangal Dam

Farmers, awaiting due compensation for land used in Nallathangal Dam construction, stage a hunger strike in Chennai after 26 years of unfulfilled promises, seeking justice and resolution from authorities.

Tirupur: Over a hundred farmers, who sacrificed their land for the construction of the Nallathangal Dam near Dharapuram in Tirupur District, have initiated a hunger strike outside the Chief Secretariat.

Despite the Tamil Nadu government’s acquisition of their land 26 years ago, pledging proper compensation of one lakh rupees per acre and 50,000 rupees for rainfed areas, the farmers have yet to receive the promised payment.

A case filed by the affected farmers six years ago was ruled in their favor, mandating compensation of Rs 75,000.

In a dramatic demonstration on the 57th day of their protest, Vijayan, a land contributor, feigned death while women adorned themselves as symbolic corpses, emphasizing their plight.

Tomorrow, over a hundred farmers plan to intensify their protest with a hunger strike outside the Chennai Chief Executive’s office, demanding immediate resolution.
