Coimbatore MP R Natarajan Accuses Modi Government of Undermining Media Freedom

Coimbatore MP R Natarajan accuses Modi government of suppressing media freedom, citing raids, arrests, and intimidation tactics. Opposition leaders protest, emphasizing the importance of preserving democratic values and press freedom.

*Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu* — Coimbatore's Member of Parliament, P R Natarajan, has alleged that the Modi government's actions against the media pose a threat to the nation's democracy. He specifically pointed out attempts to silence dissenting voices within the press and the intimidating tactics used by the government.

Natarajan, addressing the issue, stated that the Modi administration's crackdown on news agencies' online platforms resembled the suppressive methods employed by the Delhi Police. This includes imprisoning individuals without proper evidence and conducting raids on their homes and offices, seizing laptops, mobile phones, and other devices.

Furthermore, Natarajan highlighted the arrest of Prabir Purkayastha, a prominent figure associated with the news portal, Newsclick, and Amit Sengupta, an editor at the same organization. Both are now detained under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The Modi government's recent actions have raised concerns about press freedom, with journalists being targeted for their critical reporting.

In response to these developments, Natarajan, along with other opposition leaders, protested against the government's interference in media affairs. They condemned the Modi government's efforts to curb press freedom, comparing their actions to those of authoritarian regimes. The situation has sparked debates over the importance of safeguarding democratic values and press freedom in India.

The recent events have ignited public outrage, prompting discussions about the need to protect the fundamental principles of a free press and democracy. As the government's attempts to stifle dissent continue, the battle for press freedom in India remains a pressing concern for journalists and citizens alike.
