Water Released for Irrigation in Udumalpet Amaravathi Dam, Addressing Farmers’ Water Crisis

Water released from Udumalpet Amaravathi Dam alleviates farmers' water crisis in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Approximately 47,117 acres of agricultural land benefit, addressing the pressing need for irrigation.

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu: In response to the pressing demands of farmers, water has been released from the Udumalpet Amaravathi Dam, both for existing crops and upcoming cultivation. This move comes after farmers faced water scarcity due to a reduced inflow in the Amaravathi Dam, prompting them to petition the Department of Agriculture.

The ancient and new cultivation plots in the Udumalai region, housing crops such as paddy and sugarcane, were wilting without adequate water supply. Today, addressing this critical situation, Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Agriculture, Saminathan, oversaw the opening of water supply channels, ensuring a steady flow of water to approximately 47,117 acres of agricultural land.

Farmers’ representatives, along with local government officials, witnessed the inauguration of this water distribution initiative. Among those present were Krishnadas, the coordinator of cooperative societies in the northern region, Eswarasami, a representative from the southern region, and Marimuthu, the head of the Elayamuthur Panchayat Council.

This initiative, led by the Department of Agriculture, aims to alleviate the water crisis faced by farmers in the Udumalpet region. The timely release of water is expected to rejuvenate the agricultural activities, providing relief to the farming community in the area.
