Coimbatore Set to Begin Construction of Semmozhi Poonga Post-Diwali - CCMC Commissioner

During his visit to the proposed location at the central prison grounds, Prabhakaran said the first phase of the project will start post-diwali, which is estimated to cost ₹172 crore.

Coimbatore: The city of Coimbatore is poised to initiate the construction of the much-awaited Semmozhi Poonga, a multi-crore botanical garden project, immediately following the Diwali celebrations. M Sivaguru Prabhakaran, the Corporation Commissioner, has confirmed that approvals for three preliminary work orders have been secured, with two additional clearances anticipated soon.

“Construction of a convention center is among the sanctioned orders. We expect to start post-Diwali, although a specific commencement date is yet to be determined,” Prabhakaran stated.

During his visit to the proposed location at the central prison grounds, Prabhakaran carried out a thorough site inspection. The state government has urged the local civic body to expedite the first phase of the project, which is estimated to cost ₹172 crore.

The concept of Semmozhi Poonga was initially proposed by the late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the World Classical Tamil Conference in 2010. However, the project saw a decade of dormancy due to the DMK’s absence from power. The current Chief Minister, M K Stalin, had revived the project as a central commitment in his electoral campaign for Coimbatore in the 2021 elections.

Spanning 45 acres, the park is designed to include a variety of amenities such as multilevel car parking, a dedicated children’s play zone, and tracks for walking and jogging, aiming to enhance the city’s green space and recreational infrastructure.
